Help Mark Shimkets Beat Cancer

Hey everyone,

We're reaching out to you with heavy hearts and an urgent plea for support. Our dear son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin and overall amazing human being Mark Shimkets has recently been diagnosed with lymphoma and acute leukemia at just 26-years-old.

The diagnosis came as a surprise to us all, and Mark has been in the hospital since Feb 15th, going through a battery of tests to determine the best course of action to battle this cancer. He began chemo on the 27th, and currently we don't know when he'll even be able to return home.

Mark is a stand up comic and has the unique ability to find satire in any situation. He's faced this terrifying life challenge with humor and resilience, bringing smiles to the faces of doctors and other hospital staff. However, now he's facing a battle that requires more than just jokes – he needs our help.

The cost of treatment for acute leukemia can be an astonishing $490,000. Even with insurance, Mark will rack up crippling debt in this process - while simultaneously being unable to work. This unexpected financial burden has hit Mark just as he was gearing up for a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as a support act for Steve Hofstetter on a month-long European comedy tour later this year. It's heartbreaking to see him confronted with this challenge just as he was about to embark on a dream journey.

Despite the tough times, Mark is in good spirits, channeling his comedic talent even from the hospital. He debuted new material about his journey via Zoom on Steel City Arts Foundation's weekly open mic from his hospital bed, proving that laughter truly is the best medicine.
